2023 Fall River Cleanup

2023 Fall River Cleanup

September 16th 2023 ( 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM )

Update: Pre-registration for FoRR’s 2023 Fall River Cleanup has now closed due to all sites reaching maximum volunteer capacity. You may join as a walk-up attendee, but please know that you will not be guaranteed a t-shirt. You must check-in at the FoRR table upon arrival and fill out waivers before participating in the cleanup.  Details for each site location can be found below in the sections labeled "Click Here for Volunteer Information" beside each site name.

Registered volunteers received additional information via email  on September 13. Thank you!

Join Friends of the Reedy River on Saturday, September 16 from 9 - 11:30 am for our 2023 Fall River Cleanup! Check-in will be from 8:30-9am before the cleanup begins. In the event of inclement weather, the cleanup will be rescheduled for the following Saturday, September 23.

We want to thank our sponsors, Duke Energy, Mast General Store, Dapper Ink, and our afterparty sponsor, Southernside Brewing Co., for helping us maintain our community's treasure of the Reedy River. We could not do this project without them!

Cleanup Site Locations for this year’s Fall Cleanup:
  • Riverside Apartments near Swamp Rabbit Cafe  [Click Here for Volunteer Information - Riverside]

    • Check-in behind Riverside Apartments at 1121 Tsali Circle near the intersection of Hampton Ave. & Patterson St. Parking will be available in the rear parking lot of Riverside Apartments (do not park in the front of Riverside’s Parking Lot) and across the street at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church parking lots on Old Bleachery Rd.

    • This location will focus on cleaning the Reedy River immediately behind Riverside Apartments (near Swamp Rabbit Cafe), and the Reedy River along the Swamp Rabbit Trail between West Washington Street and the railroad crossing at  E. Bramlett Street. Most volunteers should be prepared to get in the water, or can help taxi litter from the river to the designated trash pick-up points. Please bring waders if you have them as some areas with high concentrations of litter can be difficult to access otherwise.

  • S. Hudson to Westfield Street, downstream of Unity Park [Click Here for Volunteer Information - S. Hudson]

    • Check-in and park in the parking lot located at 355 S. Hudson St. (behind A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School, near the intersection of the SRT and S. Hudson).

    • This location’s volunteers will focus on removing litter from the river and the surrounding wetlands on either side of the Swamp Rabbit Trail between S. Hudson Street and Westfield Street, and can move upstream to Unity Park, too.

  • Cancer Survivors Park [Click Here for Volunteer Information - Cancer Survivors Park]

    • Check-in just behind the parking lot for Cancer Survivors Park at 52 Cleveland St, Greenville, SC 29601, near the intersection of Cleveland St. & Ridgeland Dr. This parking lot is the primary parking location for volunteers at this site. Overflow parking located in the parking lot of the adjacent law office at 24 Cleveland St.

    • This site will be in the water and on the banks of the Reedy River near Cancer Survivors Park just downstream of Falls Park.

  • Conestee Nature Preserve [Click Here for Volunteer Information - Conestee Nature Preserve]

    • Specific details TBD including parking and check-in location, and specific cleanup location. We will be cleaning along the banks of the river near Conestee's main entrance near the baseball fields.
  • Log Shoals Road  [Click Here for Volunteer Information - Log Shoals]

    • Check-in and park at 2561 Standing Springs Rd., Greenville SC, 29605

    • This site is both in and out of the water  as we focus on cleaning the banks of the Reedy in a neighborhood off of Log Shoals Road and remove debris from the river itself in the same area.

  • Boyds Mill Pond - Laurens County [Click Here for Volunteer Information - Boyds Mill Pond]

    • Check-in and park at Karl H. Dixon Memorial Park, located at 1091 Boyd’s Mill Pond Rd., Laurens, SC 29360. The check-in location will be in the parking lot of the park.

    • This site is primarily out of the water. We will meet at the parking lot and collect litter near the boat ramp at the park and along roadsides when accompanied by a site leader. Volunteers can also move farther down to the Boyd’s Mill Pond Dam. There are public restrooms at the park.

Specific site information will be emailed to registered volunteers during the week before the Cleanup and posted here on our website.

We will have a registration cap for each site to ensure we don’t put undue pressure on the river or our resources at any one location, so be sure to register before your favorite location fills up! Everyone must register individually and must have their own separate signed waiver. There are no group registrations available for this cleanup. People who wish to be at the same site as their friends, family, or coworkers should sign up as soon as possible once registration opens on August 21. Registration will officially close on September 10 or once all locations are full.

Please plan to dress appropriately. Wear clothes that can get wet & dirty, and waders or boots if you have them (closed toe shoes required). FoRR will provide all other necessary items such as gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, tools, etc. We will follow up with additional details about what to expect the week before the cleanup.

After the cleanup, volunteers are encouraged to join us at our Fall Cleanup Afterparty Celebration at Southernside Brewing (25 Delano Drive Unit D, Greenville, South Carolina 29601) to celebrate our hard work and FORR’s 30th Anniversary !

We can’t wait to see everyone at the river soon!  Please contact us with any questions.
